Why Training Harder Isn't Making You Better

Key Insights

  • Effort isn't the bottleneck - if it was, you'd already be ahead of everyone you train with, since you're already outworking them.

  • One hidden limiter is usually capping your performance - speed, power, fatigue control or movement quality - and it's almost never the one you'd guess.

  • You're probably training the wrong thing hardest - athletes gravitate toward what already feels strong, while the real limiter sits untouched.

  • Guessing wrong looks identical to training hard - same hours, same effort, same plateau, just no idea why it's not moving.

  • Real numbers beat a vibe check - testing speed, power, fatigue resistance, and movement quality individually is the only way to actually find your ceiling.

Featured Question

“I train harder than anyone on my team, so why am I not getting better?”

Someone asked us this after a session last month. We could tell it wasn't the first time he'd asked himself the same thing - you could hear it in how he said it. Not frustrated. Tired. The kind of tired that comes from doing everything right and still not seeing it pay off.

If that's you, you're not alone and you're not imagining it. This is one of the most common things we hear from athletes who train seriously but plateau anyway - and almost every time, the reason isn't what they think it is.

You're Not Under-Trained. You're Mis-Targeted.

Here's the truth: effort was never your problem. If it was, you'd already be ahead - you're in the gym more than anyone you play with. You're not missing sessions. You're not cutting corners. So it's tempting to think the answer is just more - more sets, more sessions, more intensity.

But more of the wrong thing doesn't get you anywhere. It just makes the plateau more exhausting.

What's actually missing isn't effort. It's knowing exactly what to work on and that's a harder thing to admit, because it means the hours you've already put in weren't wasted - they were just aimed at the wrong target.

The Limiter Is Rarely The Thing You'd Guess.

Every athlete has one thing quietly capping their performance - usually one of four: speed, power, control under fatigue or movement quality. And here's the part that trips people up: it's almost never the one you've been training hardest.

That's not a coincidence. Athletes gravitate toward what they're already good at, or what feels productive, or what their last program happened to emphasise. Meanwhile the actual limiter sits untouched, because nobody's told them it's there. Without testing, you're guessing which one it is - and guessing wrong for months feels exactly like this. Working harder. Staying in the same place. Wondering what's wrong with your work ethic, when the real issue was never your work ethic at all.

Stop Guessing. Get The Data.

So get tested. Not a vibe check - not "how did that feel" or "do you feel faster than last month". Real numbers, measured properly: speed, power output, how you hold up under fatigue and how clean your movement stays when things get hard.

Find the actual limiter before you spend another training block on the wrong thing. This isn't about adding more to your program - it's about redirecting the effort you're already putting in toward the one area that's actually capping you. Most athletes are surprised by what testing reveals. The thing they assumed was fine turns out to be the ceiling. The thing they've been neglecting turns out to be the fix.
